The untapped potential of the graceful nature of Modern Adaptive Marketable Design inspired my garment. We see many contemporary brands striving for minimalist nature within the inclusivity category. I took on the challenge of combining fun, femininity and functionality in my garment to create a piece that makes the wearer feel empowered and beautiful within the most vulnerable time, bedtime. The title of my design, Siesta Verve, is reflective of the Spanish word for “nap time,” and the enthusiasm towards it. Everyone deserves to be comfortable in what they wear to sleep, and that is especially true for people who are not able-bodied. My model Lauren continued to inspire me after I saw her interview. Her personality was so vivid and fun, I wanted to create a garment that she would feel sexy and comfortable in all at once!
I usually design in color, so I wanted to do something vibrant. When I saw Lauren’s interview I was really excited to try to play around dying and mixing colors. I chose a papaya shade to try an orangey tone that isn’t overtly sexy. I mixed a couple of colors to come up with something interesting that I haven’t seen on the market recently to try to be forward-thinking within the trends.
I wanted to emphasize comfortable sleeping elements, so I went with a very stretchy and soft spandex with thin and malleable elastics. I wanted Lauren to not feel like she was weighed down by her fabrics. I made the back mesh so it was very breathable and wearable while she sits so the look can be more than just a sleep item. I love bows and hearts, so I wanted to incorporate a piece of my design signature into this special garment.
The first challenge I had with my garment is that Lauren doesn’t wear conventional underwear, and the look that was chosen for me to design was a thong. So I created a thong that was more to feel good in, at home. As for the camisole, I wanted to do something very lightweight and convertible. Convertible not just in the adaptive sense, but also something that she can wear to sleep as well as out.
I made sure to incorporate super tiny magnets in one of the seams of her camisole it can be put on from left to right without worrying about arm mobility. I also incorporated G hooks, typically used in swimwear, to be able to adjust the straps.
