Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
B. NORMAN COLLIER
I was born in 1946 in Coalville, a coal mining town, near to Leicester and in the Heart of the UK, which at that time was the centre for hosiery, knitwear and footwear industries. My father unfortunately passed away when I was only 4 years old, which ensured that as I grew up, I had no choice but to develop a good work ethic, which has served me well throughout my career. I was educated at the local Primary School and then Ashby De La Zouch Grammar school, where I took an active part in football (soccer) and cricket. On leaving school at 16, I was not attracted by the thought of working in the mines and so took up a position as trainee manager at the local elastic company Clutsom & Kemp. After 17 years I left the company, which was then part of Courtaulds, to set up and become a shareholder in a crochet elastic plant – Elastic Trims. Because of the migration of the garment industry, initially to North Africa and then Asia, I was given the opportunity to partner Marty Trust and Mahesh Amalean to create Stretchline PVT in Sri Lanka. Over the last 20 years Stretchline has positioned itself in 7 countries producing 20million mts/wk and supplying most of the world’s major brands and retailers. I was awarded an Honorary Degree in the Arts from De Montfort University in Leicester in 2012. This was given for my service to the industry and support of the Contour Fashion course and its students. I have now been involved in manufacturing elastic for 53 years, supported by my wife Janet, 2 children, Adam & Anna and 5 wonderful grandchildren. Apart from a busy work schedule, I try to make time for my hobbies – golf and horse racing and supporting our Leicester City Football Club. I am extremely proud and honoured to be receiving this prestigious award. I am lucky to work in an industry where I have so many good memories and have developed so many close friends and colleagues I have seen many changes to the industry over the years but one thing that remains the same is the unique close, enthusiastic and innovative people involved in our intimate apparel business.
Thank You Notes from the 2017 Fashion Institute of Technology Student Design Contest Winners and Finalists
I would love to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for giving me the honor of winning first prize for the Femmy design contest! It is truly an amazing recognition to receive. I am continually blown away by the amount of support the Underfashion Club has offered to me as a student. I will be forever grateful. It has helped to shape my college career, and allowed me to grow as a designer.I am so very excited to go to Paris! I have never been, and I cannot wait to enjoy the city, the food, and the lingerie. Thank you so much, and I hope to see some of you again in Paris.
All the Very Best,
1st Prize Winner
The past few months have been rigorous and stressful, but definitely worth every second worked. I am very happy and grateful that I have had the opportunity to compete in the Femmy Gala Design Contest! I feel completely blessed that the Underfashion Club exists, because nowhere else do you see an appreciation for such a skill and passion. I am also grateful for being a recipient of a SAIG scholarship, and being able to participate in the summer internship program. It was a great experience that has strengthened my knowledge of the intimate apparel industry. The Underfashion Club has greatly helped me reach my goals, more quickly than expected and has opened many doors! I would like to thank you very much for all of your generosity and support!
2nd Prize Winner
Thank you so much for the opportunity to create and show a look at the Femmy Gala! It was such a thrill to talk to people about my project and hear their thoughts. I am overjoyed by the positive responses I heard and thrilled to have won third place. It was so meaningful to be able to have people in the industry come up to me to talk about my look and inspiration, ask me about my interest in intimates, and find out what my plans were for the future. The support the club gives to students is so incredible. Over the past few semesters, the club has really helped me financially as well as helping me present myself and my work to industry members who I hope to encounter again after graduation. It was truly an amazing experience.

3rd Prize Winner
I want to thank the Underfashion Club for the continuous support they have provided us at FIT. I am honored to be selected as one of the six finalists for the Femmy Contest of 2017, and very thankful for the opportunity to meet industry professionals at the Gala. It was not only an eye opening experience, but an inspiration to strive for success.
I want to say thank you to the Underfashion Club who introduced the journey of the Student Design Contest to my seventh semester class at FIT. Also I want to thank Macra Lace, Tianhai Athletic Solutions, and Stretchline for offering us additional supplies, which allowed our designs to come to life along with the stipend we received once selected as semifinalists. Receiving the stipend was more than helpful because I was able to design more freely and research more options in depth.I truly enjoyed being a part of the contest, because it allowed me to design something specific for my target customer; as well as bringing my design to life from my sketch pad to dress form and also, I was able to experiment with laser cutting and adding different components to my design to reflect my true aesthetic as young designer.
Thank you so much Underfashion Club.
Thank you so much for your generosity and support. I am so very grateful for being able to attend the Femmy Gala and take part in the student design competition. The opportunity to showcase my work and meet a variety of industry professionals at the Femmy Gala was incredibly valuable, especially as we near our graduation. The support I and my classmates have received from the various programs of the club is simply amazing. I deeply appreciate the wonderful support I have received throughout these final years of my studies from the Underfashion Club.
Thank you again, for this amazing opportunity. The invitation to attend the Femmy Gala and take part in the student design competition was an experience that I value greatly.
Thank you so very much. This will definitely lighten my load. It will give me a some type of security when it come to my finances. Just this week I was tempted to drop out of school because of financial reasons. Thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart, again I thank you.
Thank you so much for awarding me with the very generous scholarship on behalf of the Underfashion Club. I want you to know how much I appreciate your investment in me and my future. It was a great experience meeting you all and hearing the positive feedback you gave regarding my work. I am excited to start my exploration into the Intimate Apparel Industry, and this scholarship will be a great financial help in achieving my academic goals. I hope to meet with you again in the future!
I would like to thank the members of the Saig Committee for awarding me this prestigious scholarship. This was such an honor. When I received the email I was at FIT working on my term garment for draping and my emotions ranged from grateful, thankful and the realization that this is where I belong. FIT is my home away from home the place that gave me the foundation to pursue my dreams. I know the road before me will be an adventure but with hard work and determination I am confident my goals and dreams will come true.
Thank you once again for this great opportunity.
Thank you for this amazing scholarship! I can honestly not put into words how much this means to me. Not only will this help me further my studies, but it takes such a huge weight off of my shoulders.
Thank you so much for this opportunity. I am so grateful for the Underfashion Club and the scholarship.
