Wilting Beauty
For this contest, I decided to use two elements (Splendid 2 Piece PJ Set and the Eileen West Long Sleeve Ballet Nightgown) and a lace from the box I received from UFC. I used the Viscose PJ set for the whole corset top I made because the fabric has a bit more weight than the Short Sleeve Tee and my goal for the corset is to give a bit more structure to the garment. I clean-finished the whole corset with white 100% cotton Ballet Nightgown as lining. For every piece of the pattern for the outside and lining, I added a layer of medium/heavy weight of fusible
interfacing to stabilize the fabric and make sure they will not stretch when I lace the corset to close in CB. In between outside and lining, I put a layer of heavyweight non fusible interfacing to achieve the structure look to the corset. The front bust part where I used Trapunto technique, I also added a layer of 100% cotton Ballet Nightgown in the back of the main fabric in order for me to insert the cord in and stitch through both layers. I got some ribbon tape and used it as boning channels and the spiral boning to give the shape to the corset. For closure, I added some grommets and lacing in the CB. I am planning to finish the hems with bias tape binding. I have a small piece of recycled lace I got from Milan and the motif is kind of matching with the lace I received from UFC that I used for panties, so I decided to add that into some panels of my corset, and it also goes with my title “wilting beauty” which I could use my lace to make a new garment and not go to waste. For the bottom piece, I used the same main fabric as the corset for front and back but without any fusible since I want it to stretch, and the lace I received from UFC as the side panels, so it is a bit of skin showing at the side.
Kea Oudom Seng
I was born and raised in Cambodia, a country where people believe fashion design is not for men. But fashion has always been a thing for me since I was a kid and, after talking with my parents, my move to the U.S. for school in 2019 has made a big change in my life. With their support, I am pursuing my dream to define who I am as a person and a designer. Having a unique signature style has made me more visible and easier to pick out of a crowd. I am really into haute couture clothing with elegant “ball gown” looks and embroidered clothing with exaggerated silhouettes. I also love to bring cultures into my collection and the combination of old and new which I believe is “Art.” I am ready for the next stage of my career in the industry and look forward to sharing what I have learned with the next generation, bringing back this knowledge to Cambodia and serving the community as much as I can.
