Self Obsession
In order to achieve the construction of my design, the two required garments I used are the Eileen West Long Sleeve Ballet Nightgown, and the Short-Sleeve Legging Tee. I also used the provided waist trim lace from Hanky Panky and the Faux Patent Leather Leggings.
I dyed the lace trims to black and the T-shirt a dark gray color. I also dyed the nightgown plum purple, for an added pop of color in the lining.
Beginning with the top, I used the Patent Leather Leggings to create the pointed shape I desired along the front and sides of the top. In this same area, I used the Ballet Nightgown as a lining for the leather, to help reinforce the shape of the top. The lace trim, engineered for use as a waistband, worked perfectly as an applique for under the leather and wrapping around the back of the top.
The sheerness of the lace works beautifully to show off just the right amount of skin below the leather. At the bottom of the lace, I appliqued the T-shirt, using it as a cascading skirt layer. I placed grip elastic along the princess lines in the front of the garment, with spiral steel boning inside to ensure the top stays in place and maintains its shape. At the back of the top, I again used grip elastic and boning to ensure the back closure has leverage and is secure. For the closure, I used 6 adjustable elastic straps going into a single hook and eye bra closure to achieve a functional and unique stylization. I also added a swan closure with elastic at the back of the skirt layer, to allow for additional coverage and security.
At the center front of the top, at the apex of the lace, I placed a tiny “vampy” bow to complete the look. I plan to finish the construction of the top with fold over elastic along the neckline to create a smooth and pointed finish. I also am planning to add decorations in some way to the top, such as flowers, gems, and beads after testing which style of decor best accentuates the set. While the voluminous skirt layer in my original rendering was very long at the center front, and was a “high-low” style from side to center, I decided to shorten the center front length
significantly.
Since none of the required garments were sheer enough to achieve the original design, I opted to make the high-low effect happen from front to back with longer tails at the
back. This allowed me to maintain the overall attitude of the top, without completely hiding the intricate panty below.
During the construction of the panty, I used the waistband lace at the center front and back of the panty. The cheeky design features the scalloped edge of the lace at either side in the back of the panty, while the engineered point of the lace takes center stage at the panty’s front.
The gusset of the panty is made of the T-shirt material, and lined with the Nightgown. The Nightgown material was specifically used for the panty lining because it is 100% cotton.
The intricate elastic detail of the panty was constructed with three adjustable elastic straps running from the front to the back waistband of the panty. The lowest strap also functions as the top edge of the back of the panty. In the front, five black rings formed into a triangle allow for the
diamond-like elastic design at the center front.
There is also a cute crisscross elastic detail at the center back of the panty.
The only materials I used which were not provided by the context are elastics, threat, slides, O-rings, closures, boning, thread, and decor.

I was born and raised in New Jersey, growing up in the small town of Columbia, near the Delaware Water Gap. I have always cared for fashion, and spent a lot of my childhood doing crafts and learning to make my own accessories. I learned to sew from my grandmother, who had also gone to school for fashion design when she was my age. Her continuous passion and excitement inspired me to pursue my own love of fashion. She encouraged me when I decided to apply to the Fashion Institute of Technology for fashion design and helped me work through the challenges along the way. Her support is the reason I am excited to pursue my design career in intimate apparel. After graduation, I plan to work full time as an intimate apparel designer for a brand that allows my creativity to thrive.
