The materials that I used in the construction of this project include light weight mesh (included in box), power mesh (purchased separately), 3/8” elastic (purchased separately), V-fold elastic (included in box), underwire and plastic boning (included in box).
I chose to use the lightweight mesh and power mesh because it is a perfect material for the minimalist theme. Mesh drapes nicely against the body as an intimate apparel fabric and when used in the correct colors the mesh acts as paint on a canvas. Instead of choosing a floral lace to represent my bird of paradise mood theme, I chose to juxtapose green and pink mesh to create the experience of viewing the flower from a close, minimal perspective.
The trim that I chose to use to finish the edges is the v-fold elastic. I chose to use the V-fold elastic to create smooth lines along the edges. I used the 3/8” elastic to cover seams and to help define the contrasting shapes by creating a clean separation between the colors.
For my bandeau bra I chose to use underwire and plastic boning. I used the underwire to create a floating underwire that supports the bust and gives a nice shape. I added plastic boning at the side seams, as well as, at the back seams by the metal closure. I used the plastic boning to hold the shape of the bra in the areas where the mesh would easily stretch out of shape.
Devin Olguin
My Name is Devin Olguin. I’m originally from Ogden, Utah. I was raised by my Native American/Spanish father who is a skilled welder/sculpture/artist. I studied at the University of Utah and abroad at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. After my time in Puerto Rico, I realized that math and science (my first area of study) wasn’t my life’s calling. I returned to Utah where I spent two years working as a wild land firefighter. During that time, I was introduced to fashion design by an old friend and I quickly realized that fashion was the industry that I wanted to enter. I made the difficult decision to leave my job as a firefighter and move to New York. I spent two years interning for Jussara Lee while developing my portfolio. After a denied application to FIT, I reapplied and was accepted. Since then, I have learned a lot at FIT. I was an AAS critic finalist, I interned for Zille Huma (Parsons Fashion MFA), and during the height of the pandemic, I interned for Samuelle Couture. Most recently, I had the chance to design for Dream Doll, a famous Bronx born music artist. She used two of my original designs for two music videos. I’m now in my senior semester at FIT and I hope to be featured in the Future of Fashion Show. After graduation I plan to gain industry experience and ultimately create my own brand.
